At Squirrel Hayes, the intention of our MFL curriculum is to develop an interest in and thirst for learning other languages. We aim, to introduce the learning of the French language and the understanding of its culture in enjoyable and stimulating ways. We hope to lay the foundations for future language learning.

We learn French in the mixed Year 3 and Year 4 class. Children are encouraged to learn French numbers, colours, food names, greetings, the days of the week, the months of the year, the names of animals, the names of body parts and many other things. We do this very practically with lots of partner talk. We use a range of songs and other learning materials. Children learn to express their thoughts and ideas in French both in speech and writing.
