PE

PE school uniform is pictured below:

At Squirrel Hayes First School, we firmly believe in the importance to teach the children the fundamental movements that will underpin the foundation of a variety of sports. We aim to provide high quality PE lessons in which the children are able to develop physical stamina (improving fitness), as well as their physical skills, including core stability. We want to support children and parents to understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle and how this goes beyond physical activity.

We do this through fully adhering to the aims of the national curriculum for physical education to ensure that all children:

• develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

• are physically active for sustained periods of time

• engage in competitive sports and activities

• lead healthy, active lives

We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding the fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.

The PE curriculum is taught through the use of the PE Hub, which is in-line with the National Curriculum, and is used to aid teaching staff in their subject knowledge and planning of PE. Teachers are able to adjust and change lessons to suit the needs of their classes, but the scheme provides a strong basis of what is expected in each year group. Each lesson, children are given the opportunity to practise skills in a variety of ways and each lesson builds upon the previous skills, allowing them time to embed it and collaborate within a team. Different skills are recapped throughout, and across, the years, each time they are being built upon; allowing children to know more and remember more.
